Ask Joan: Power of Pets more than just a fundraiser

This week in my column, I want to let you know about a special event that raises funds to meet a growing need in our community – supporting older adults in keeping and caring for their pets.
AgeSpan’s Power of Pets fundraiser will be held Wednesday, September 10, from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. at BareWolf Brewery in Amesbury. It’s a fun and relaxed evening out that supports a program making a big difference for older adults and their beloved pets.
Anyone who has had a pet knows the joy, companionship, and comfort they bring. My two dogs, Willow and Max are not just pets, they’re a part of my family. That’s also true for Julie, who lives in Heritage Towers in Amesbury with her cat Bella. Julie lives alone and Bella has been her constant companion for more than 16 years. When Julie had to stop working and Bella got sick, she didn’t know how she could afford the care Bella needed. Thanks to the Power of Pets program, Julie was able to get the medical tests and treatment that helped Bella recover and stay by her side.
In Tewksbury, Jeannie lives at The Villa with her dog, Peanut, who has become the building’s unofficial mascot. Peanut’s cheerful presence is a source of comfort for many residents – and for Jeannie, she’s everything. Jeannie says she wouldn’t be able to keep Peanut if it weren’t for the help she received from Power of Pets.
Since it began in 2022, the program has helped more than 500 people age 65 and older by providing financial assistance for pet care expenses. Whether it’s a check-up, medication, or grooming, the program helps keep pets healthy and with the people who love them. But it depends on grants and donations to continue.
Tickets for the Power of Pets fundraiser are just $25 per person and include one craft beer or wine and light refreshments. It’s sure to be a fun evening with games, door prizes, and raffle baskets. Of course, the event is dog-friendly, so you can bring your favorite furry friend along with you. To purchase tickets or donate to this program, visit our website at www.agespan.org/upcoming-events/. I hope to see you there!
