Ask Joan: Important to stay hydrated during the winter

Q. I’m worried that my parents aren’t staying hydrated enough, especially in the winter months when it’s so dry and they have the heat up. Do you have any tips I can give to them?
Staying hydrated during the winter months can be just as important as in the warmer seasons, especially for older adults. Cold weather often reduces thirst, and with indoor heating, people may not realize they’re becoming dehydrated. Here are some tips to ensure that hydration stays a priority during winter.
Drink Water Regularly. Even if you don’t feel thirsty, aim to drink water throughout the day. Keeping a water bottle nearby or setting reminders can help ensure consistent hydration.
Add Flavor to Water. If plain water doesn’t seem appealing, try adding slices of citrus, berries, or cucumber. You can also enjoy herbal teas or warm water with lemon, which not only hydrates but can also be soothing during chilly days.
Eat Water-Rich Foods. Incorporating water-rich foods into your diet is another great way to stay hydrated. Soups, stews, and broths are perfect for colder weather and can help replenish fluids. Fruits like oranges, pears, and watermelon also contain high water content.
Avoid Excessive Caffeine and Alcohol. While a hot cup of coffee or tea might seem comforting, caffeine can have a diuretic effect, increasing the need to urinate. Similarly, alcohol can lead to dehydration, so it’s best to moderate consumption during the winter months.
Monitor Your Urine. A good way to track hydration levels is by observing urine color. It should be pale yellow; if it’s dark, it’s a sign that you need to drink more water.
By staying mindful of hydration during the winter, older adults can help maintain their health and energy levels, making the cold season more enjoyable and comfortable.
