Our Town Senior Center Spotlight, Opportunities in My Community Series continues and this month we look to highlight the beautiful nautical city of Newburyport.

The Newburyport Senior Center now located at 331 High St in Newburyport is 16,000 square foot building that people of Newburyport voted to build in 2012. It opened in the fall of 2015 and quickly has become a lively robust center where seniors in the community can participate in activities such watercolor or oil painting, billards or Bocci, go on a day trip or listen to guest speaker. Additional activities include knitting, Zumba, ballet and tap dance lessons, meditation for stress reduction, bingo, bridge and the list goes on. Additionally there are Conversation Groups for seniors who speak German and French. There are Support Groups for people with Low Vision and Parkinson’s. The Center is also a local information and support center, with resources such Elder Care Law Attorneys, SHINE counselors, Tax Assistance, and a site for Meals on Wheels.
 

There is wellness and health assistance on a monthly basis from local dental hygienists and podiatrists. What about having Reiki or getting Massage? The Center offers both as well.

There is a Computer Education lab where all questions are welcome.

Most recently the Newburyport Senior Center and The Family Caregiver Support Program of Elder Services of The Merrimack Valley started a Memory Café which takes place on the first Tuesday of the month from 1:00-3:00 pm. This Magic Moment Memory Café is open to residents of the Merrimack Valley who have memory loss and their caregivers. The Café offers an engaging activities and socialization for both the caregiver and person with memory loss.
 
The new space has only enhanced the great work of Director Roseann Robillard who has worked tirelessly for many years to assist and advocate for the seniors in Newburyport even before the building was built. The new center has only highlighted all that is great about Newburyport and Robillard’s vision for a center where all who enter are welcome. There is a diverse list of activities and support and there is something for everyone. As Director Robillard states “Newburyport is a healthy community because it is a city that addresses the needs of both the young and the older residents and it is proactive with its services and programs.”
