Four Decades of Compassion: Ann Souza’s Enduring Legacy at AgeSpan

Categories: Years of Service

A lot has changed in the last 40 years at AgeSpan. Technology has transformed the way we work, with computers replacing typewriters, cell phones replacing pagers, and paperwork becoming digital. The agency has grown, and so have the services it offers, helping older adults live longer, healthier lives. But through all the change, some things have stayed remarkably constant.

One of those constants is Ann Souza.

Ann, a longtime Care Manager, has been a steady and compassionate presence for AgeSpan consumers and their families through four decades of change. Her calm demeanor, deep knowledge, and genuine care have made her a cornerstone of the agency’s Home Care team.

“Ann has helped countless consumers and their family members over the years,” says Lucy McKinnon, Director of Home Care. “Her expertise and patience have been a constant during times of change.”

So what’s the secret behind Ann’s staying power? She simply loves what she does.

As a Care Manager, Ann coordinates services that help older adults maintain their independence at home. But for her, the job is about much more than logistics. It’s about connection.

“Seeing my clients is the best part of my day,” Ann says. “I like my co-workers, but I also enjoy getting out of the office to talk with my clients. Some like to chat, some don’t. Every visit is different, and that keeps it interesting.”

Ann never planned to stay at AgeSpan this long, but the agency’s flexibility made it possible to balance work and family life over the years. Along the way, she built friendships, gained confidence, and found purpose in her role.

While some colleagues moved into new positions, Ann chose to stay right where she felt she was needed most, on the front lines working directly with clients. She believes organizations thrive when there’s a mix of fresh perspectives and long-term experience. Her years of experience give her perspective on even the toughest cases.

“Ann’s expertise and patience make her a great match for complex cases,” McKinnon says. “She is often the go-to Care Manager when a client needs someone who can calmly handle difficult situations. She’s positive, steady, and always compassionate.”

Ann’s role has also helped her grow on a personal level. Once shy, she has become a fierce advocate for her clients.

“When you’re out there in the field, you learn how to work with all kinds of people,” she says. “You have to figure out how to connect with people who may have mental health challenges or dementia. You learn to stand your ground and speak up for what your clients need.”

Though she tends to shy away from the spotlight, Ann has quietly mentored many new Care Managers over the years, generously sharing her knowledge and encouragement.

“I do like to help other people do the job and to learn,” she says. “It’s really nice to take what you’ve learned and pass it on.”

Ann’s 40 years of service reflect not just dedication to a job, but a lifelong commitment to people.

“Forty years of providing excellent care to clients is a milestone to be celebrated,” McKinnon says. “Congratulations to Ann on an amazing accomplishment!”
