Ask Joan: Best ways to wage war on cold, flu season

Q: It seems like colds and flu are making a comeback just as the holidays approach. How can I protect my parents during this time?
The holiday season, a time for family and celebration, but also the season for colds and flu. As we prepare to gather with loved ones, here are some proactive steps to keep older adults safe and healthy during flu season:
Get the Flu Shot: The CDC recommends everyone 6 months and older get their annual flu shot, but it’s especially critical for older adults. People 65 and up should opt for the high-dose flu vaccine, as their immune systems are less responsive to the standard dose.
Practice Good Hygiene: Simple, yet effective—wash hands frequently, especially before eating or after being out in public. Don’t forget to cover those sneezes and coughs to help prevent germs from spreading.
Eat Well: A nutrient-rich diet full of fruits, veggies, whole grains, and lean proteins can help bolster the immune system, making it more resilient to infections.
Stay Active: Regular physical activity, even light walking or stretching, helps strengthen the body’s defenses and keeps the immune system in top shape.
Prioritize Sleep: Aim for 7–9 hours of quality sleep each night. Sleep isn’t just for recharging, it’s essential for immune health.
Avoid Close Contact with Sick People: The flu is incredibly contagious. Try to steer clear of anyone showing signs of illness to avoid exposure.
Manage Stress: Stress can negatively impact health, so it’s important to keep stress levels in check. Finding ways to relax and unwind is key to maintaining a strong immune system.
Recognize Symptoms Early: Older adults may not experience typical flu symptoms like fever or chills, so keep an eye out for more subtle signs like fatigue, body aches, or a lingering cough.
Use a Humidifier: Moist air can help soothe irritated throats and ease coughing, providing some relief during the dry, cold months.
You don’t have to skip family gatherings but taking a few precautions like keeping a safe distance can help minimize the risk. Some may even prefer to skip handshakes this year to keep germs at bay.
