When you are heading up 495 towards the Seacoast there is a wonderful city not to miss that has a very engaged and active Senior Center. Amesbury Senior Center is the second Council of Aging highlighted in our blog. Doreen Brothers is the Director and she shared some highlights about what their Senior Center offers.
The Amesbury Senior Center is located at 68 Elm St in Amesbury and offers a wide range of activities including; Zumba, 3B fitness, line dancing, Chair Yoga, Meditation, Computer Classes, A Veteran’s Support Group, Low Vision Group and so much more. Check out the picture from one of their exercise groups.
Caregivers can receive support through a new Caregiver Support Groups that is scheduled to start in November. Powerful Tools for Caregivers has also been offered in the past and new leaders are being trained this fall to offer the program again sometime in the next year. Additionally Amesbury has a Men’s Group that meets every other week and this past spring participated in the Pies for Guys Caregiver Event facilitated by the Merrimack Alzheimer’s Association Partnership where guys were able to listen to music, participate in Tai Chi, get information and support and of course have pie.
One unique program that is offered in Amesbury is the Greenleaf Supportive Day Program where people who need some limited care and socialization can engage in activities while their caregivers gain needed respite. This program also allows for caregivers to keep their loved ones at home longer.
Another program Amesbury is able to offer is the for those dealing with depression and anxiety called EMHOT (Elder Mental Health Outreach Team) The program manager with the assistance of social work and counseling interns helps to stabilize those in crisis.
This fall the Amesbury COA has acquired 7 interns from 4 different colleges who are studying social work, public health and counseling.
Doreen describes Amesbury as a nice representation of New England it offers a lot of history and character that you may not see elsewhere. There is a strong sense of community here.
