Every day, our agency delivers hot meals and a daily safety check to thousands of older adults across the Merrimack Valley and North Shore.
During National Nutrition Month, local elected officials are stepping up as Community Champions to help deliver these meals with AgeSpan staff as part of the national #SaveLunch campaign to promote Meals on Wheels and raise awareness about hunger and food insecurity.
“We are grateful our local officials are helping us spread the message about the importance of these home-delivered meals, which help so many people remain healthy and independent at home,” says AgeSpan CEO Joan Hatem-Roy.
Over the past year, AgeSpan has delivered more than 900,000 meals. We offer medically tailored and culturally appropriate meals, along with congregate meals and grab-and-go options through local senior centers and housing sites.
One meal recipient from Dracut said, “I have limited strength because of an accident. It’s hard to cook, but I know each day that I have a meal to depend on.” Another recipient in Lawrence said the meals help control her diabetes.
Meals on Wheels is a vital program that delivers more than a daily, hot meal. It also provides a wellness check and friendly visit thanks to trained volunteers. In the United States, 1 in 4 older adults lives alone and feels lonely.
Meals on Wheels is part of the Older Americans Act, which is the only federally supported program dedicated to the nutritional and social needs of adults aged 60 and older.
